president, don't pick chuck hagel. he is not the right guy for d.o.d. he is well to the left of the policies of the obama administration during the first four years. so basically here's the problem. there has been a bipartisan mainstream support for national security, for our middle east policy dating back to 1978 with jimmy carter for israel, for our approach to iran, and chuck hagel has made a career out of being outside of that mainstream. engaging in hyperbole and all sorts of edgy statements. now we're to believe that he is part of the great mainstream. i just don't believe that. we're saying we need more time for information. it's not right to report the candidate on tuesday, file cloture the next day and say somehow we have to close this thing out two days after the report. >> which is didn't didn't -- >> we had found other speeches the other day that had not been disclosed. >> which is consistent with republicans' request to put the vote on hold is what you are saying earlier on. >> you had laid out your thinking fairly quickly in an op ed in po

this week in addition to the chuck hagel defense secretary nomination, the senate is expected to advance president obama's nominee to head the cia, john brennan. senator john mccain is proposing holding up the nomination of john brennan because, well, john mccain. but even in the midst of that conflict, there is an interesting confluence of opinion right now that something major should be changed in mr. brennan's field of expertise. mr. brennan broached the subject in a "washington post" profile that ran about him last october. the acting director of the cia from whom mr. brennan would take over if he is confirmed, that acting director raised the issue in an article "the new york times" published about the cia in december. and now the man, the republican senator who is threatening to hold up the brennan nomination so the acting director has to stay on, this republican senator, he too says that he agrees that something big needs to be changed. >> what we really need to do is take this whole program out of the hands of the central intelligence agency and put it into the department of defen

why is he fighting hagel over vietnam? >> it's interesting because he's ostensibly fighting with him over iraq. but it immediately becomes about vietnam. it's as how they're talking about. he seems to be mad that hagel took issue with him about iraq and compared it to vietnam being the big blunder which of course mccain and hagel both served in. when mccain talks about iraq, he only wants to talk about it from the surge on, it's as if everything before that didn't happen and didn't count. and we can still debate whether the surge worked or not. the bigger issue is whether iraq was as bad as vietnam and he doesn't want to have that argument. >> here he is, joy, why don't you respond to mccain sinking his teeth into hagel's ankle. he wouldn't let go of the question of the surge. back again to the old war. >> will you correct or incorrect when you said that the surge would be the most dangerous foreign policy blunder in this country since vietnam? were you correct or incorrect? yes or no? >> my reference to the surge being th

it was this really ham-handed fake effort to look like liberals were opposing chuck hagel, but nobody believed them and they stayed anonymous and never came out of the closet and said who they were. so no opposition on the democratic side of the aisle. no opposition on the left, except for the fake thing. and that means that the republicans would have to do something historically unprecedented and truly radical if they are going to stop chuck hagel's nomination. filibusters a cabinet nominee? unprecedented in modern times. now, they might try it. but it will be a huge deal if they did. a huge enough deal that it might even finally prompt the democrats to change the filibuster rules. so it's not likely. now, if you are looking for a high profile national security obama second term nominee who really might have some interesting opposition, who really might have some opposition from the democratic side, if not even from the left, it's not chuck hagel. obviously, it's not john kerry. the guy you are looking for is the one who is up this week. on thursday of this week, president obama's no
